I pitched a sponsor with "12k subs." They asked for open rate. I mumbled. That was the end of the thread.
Don't pitch until you can show 30-day open rate, click rate, audience description, and two past issues. Build the kit before the outreach. Platforms like Beehiiv or Substack help ship — they don't invent proof.
Numbers I keep in the kit
- Active subs (not historical signups)
- Avg open rate last 30 days
- Avg click rate last 30 days
- Who reads (job titles / niche), not "everyone interested in tech"
If opens are soft, fix subject lines and list hygiene before you sell inventory. A newsletter revenue calculator is fine for planning. It's not a pitch.
Pitch shape that didn't get ignored
One paragraph on the audience. One on results. One on format (logo, copy length, exclusivity). Price. Deadline.
No novel. No "synergy."
Compare Beehiiv vs Substack when you're choosing tools. Proof comes from the list, not the CMS.
The line I won't cross
I won't sell a dedicated send against a list I wouldn't advertise to my own customers. Short-term cash. Long-term unsubscribe bomb.
Earn the numbers. Then ask.
