I would not turn on Google Ads AI features and walk away from the account. Automation can spend money faster than you expect, especially when the structure underneath is messy.
Google Ads keeps pushing more AI into bidding, creatives, and asset generation. Some of it helps. Some of it hides weak targeting and weak landing pages behind a shiny dashboard.
Quick Answer
Use AI for ad variations and bid assistance only after your conversion tracking, search terms, negatives, and landing page message match are solid. Review queries and placements weekly. Cut anything that spends without intent fit.
The mistake is automating a broken account
If your tracking is wrong, AI optimizes toward the wrong signal.
If your search terms are broad, AI finds more broad.
If your landing page sells something different from the ad, AI just buys more disappointment faster.
I would fix:
- conversion events
- brand negatives
- location targeting
- ad-to-page headline match
- one clear offer
Then test automated bidding.
AI copy is a draft machine, not a strategy
Google can generate headlines and descriptions.
Fine. Use them as drafts.
I still want each ad to answer:
- who this is for
- what they get
- why now
If the generated line is vague, delete it.
Budget waste usually shows up in the search terms report
That is where I spend time.
Not in the AI settings page. In the actual queries.
When a query list turns into junk, negatives go in the same day.
